The course and holes

The course

The Acaya Golf course has been founded in 1996, the build were followed by the italian architect David Mezzacane. The works started in 1998 and they lasted 2 years, in 2000 he delivered the 18 Holes Par 72.

Almost ten years after the construction of the new property, always composed of entrepreneurs from Lecce who had taken over the Salentino circle, decided to reshape the path and make it an example of a new golfing culture. The studio “Hurdzan-Fry”, one of the world’s leading and prestigious golf architecture studios, undertook a deep technical, agronomic and complete remodeling of the course to achieve a level of championship play.

For the grass of the fairways was chosen a Bermuda American seed, strong and compact even in the lowest cuts, which takes into account the climatic variables of Salento and ensures an excellent floating surface of the ball for a clean and clean shot; On the sides of the fairways was sown a mixture of four types of fescue to be waved at natural height.

For the green has been selected a mixture of Agrostis Palustris was selected in the two varieties of A4 and A1: a composition that boats about twice as many stems in the grassy brush compared to common penncross.

The irrigator over 1,500, for a capillary and diversified water distribution that ensures the grass a calibrated supply, fractioned in order to reduce any hypothesis of overdose and waste. For the management and conservation of water, a complex system of lakes and streams was built, with recirculation of collection water and their natural oxygenation through a system of cascades: the goal was not to disperse into the ground the collection of rainy and flowing waters and preserve them, suitably filtered, for reuse in periods of greatest need. This impressive hydraulic engineering work will provide the customer with a very pleasant soundtrack and a series of lateral obstacles along nine of the eighteen holes.

It is a path strongly characterized by the wind with which you must “golfisticamente” coexist, as if it were a Scottish links and according to the art of which the English remain masters, adjusting the directions and height of the dish so as to take advantage of the drifts enjoying the game intelligences that the wind – defined by a great architect of the past “the most important and fascinating of hazards” – makes full of charm.

From the game point of view one of the principles pursued was to create a field that was a suitable and fair for all levels of play, professional or amateur, men, women and juniors. Preserve, therefore, the egalitarian approach of golf, which is one of the historical principles of the “democratic” system of handicaps, and make the player use all fourteen irons and woods that is carried in the bag.

The Holes

Within a natural context of rare beauty, immersed in the green of the Mediterranean maquis, “precious spontaneous vegetation”, elegantly winds on a nature that hosts it and that enhances its characteristics, a beautiful 18-hole Par 71 course of m. 6.192 length.

The completed field redone with the course and the flow of the holes remodulated pursuing the best possible harmony between natural characteristics and mode of the blows; were built batters of generous size, unusual for Italy, that allow, as a result of the different abilities and lengths expressed by different levels of play, different angles of attack and different landing areas depending on the position of the flags. The configuration of the course created by Studio Hurdzan-Fry allows on all holes to clearly see the obstacles, the fall of the ball on the first shot and from the second shot the green.

Hole 1 of the route, a beautiful par five with dog leg left, the right hole to warm up and start to enjoy the wonders of the field. The course continues with increasingly fascinating sports and landscape holes: such as hole 2, a long green furrowed by a significant cross depression that recalls the historic Biarritz Hole of the famous Yale University Golf Club.

Hole 3 is the shortest par-four in the course that can enchant you with the proximity of the green, but that sets you an ambush with the subtleties of a green complex full of nuances and risks. The 4 hole, a par three well defended by the bunkers with a green uphill, the position of the flag can make the difference. Hole 5 comes with a dog leg on the left with large spaces; also holes 6 and 7 allow ample landing spaces to the ball pulled from the drive.

The first difficulties begin at hole 8: it is one of the longest par three of the course and requires attention, precision and correct choice of stick. Hole 9 is a par five to be closed in four. Then the par four of Hole 10, the classic Cape Hole, and Hole 11, slightly uphill, requires precision and power between scrub and bunkers on the right and a series of ponds on the left to undermine the course and green. Hole 12 is a par four which in its simplicity can make life difficult for the player. Hole 13 is a par three to be played with intelligence. The par four of Hole 14 with trees on the left, water on the right and a front car puts a great strain on the player on the choice of the stick for the first shot. Hole 15 is a beautiful hole that can give you many emotions.

Hole 16 is a long par five, double dog leg, over 500 meters long. A prize hole for those who throw it long. After the impressive length of the par five, here is the shortest par three of the course, Hole 17: 130 meters from the championship tee, 93 meters from the women’s tee, with a small green surrounded by bunkers.

At the end there is the beautiful Hole 18, a nice, hard hole that seals a big golf course. You can see the ponds of water on the holes 6, 7, 8, 9,10, 11,12, 14, 18, spectacular waterfall that cuts in two holes 11 and 12. On the route there are 58 bunkers.
